���Ҵ�ýapp School of Architecture alumnus gives back to help students succeed.

As a 1993 graduate, Joe Stewart chose ���Ҵ�ýapp years ago as a student because it felt like the perfect fit, and a major in architecture fit right in as well. 

“I chose State because I felt more comfortable with the campus and felt more at home [compared to other universities],” said Stewart. “I always knew I was going to go into architecture. Even as a kid I was always intrigued with buildings. Throughout high school, I did a lot of construction work, and it solidified going into architecture.”

He explained that one of the biggest things his time at ���Ҵ�ýapp prepared him for was thinking outside of the box and understanding the big picture.

“Studio, which really helped you focus on the thought process and problem solving, did prepare me for the work force,” said Stewart.

For that reason, he advises students to “learn everything you can and learn what materials do and don’t work together. Most of all, apply common sense and learn how to best manage your time.”

His architecture career began outside of college with Sturgis and Associates, doing high-end custom residential houses and smaller commercial jobs. He later went on to work for Sverdrup Corporation, working on the Chrysler World Headquarters and Technology Center in Auburn Hills, Michigan.

Since 2007, Stewart has worked for different architecture firms and developers, focusing on construction administration and as owner’s representative on hospitality projects.

He currently lives in St. Augustine, Florida, and works for HKS Architects. His current project is the Four Seasons Hotel and Residences in Jacksonville, FL, working full-time on the job site.

In 2017 he started giving to Athletics and the “Joseph Stewart Collaborative Studio Fund for Excellence” for the Collaborative Studio between the ���Ҵ�ýapp and Building Construction Science. He explained that he is specifically wanting to support the Collaborative Studio between BCS and Architecture.

“There always seems to be a lot of animosity between the architects and construction companies. I feel it’s a very important aspect to learn both sides so that they work together to help develop successful projects,” he said.

In his gift to ���Ҵ�ýapp Athletics, Stewart aims to support the improvement of ���Ҵ�ýapp athletic facilities and support athletes who might not be able to afford college.  

“There’s a lot of kids that don’t necessarily have the financial backings to get them to college, and sports can provide an open door for a lot of them,” he said.

His advice to students applying for jobs?

“Be confident in what you say and what your strengths are, but don’t be afraid to say what your weaknesses are. Most companies want honesty and want to help you through those weaknesses.”
